What is T.P.M.S.?

Car users are increasingly seeing Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (“T.P.M.S.”) in their cars, especially high-end ones.

T.P.M.S. sensors are equipped with a pressure and temperature sensor, battery power supply and an appropriate electronic system. If problems with tire pressure are detected, the computer signals the driver in which wheel the pressure has dropped. This is obviously related to safety, as well as to the optimization of tires and fuel consumption.

Such systems are being installed in an increasing number of “regular” cars, while in the United States all new cars must be equipped with these systems.

For such systems to work properly, it is necessary to activate each sensor (it is “dormant” before being installed in the car so as not to waste battery power), check its correct operation (pressure, temperature, battery status readings) and perform identification in the on-board computer (the computer must know that the sensor is located, f.ex. in the right rear wheel). During the assembly of the car in the factory, these activities are performed on the production line, while in service stations, e.g. when replacing the sensor or changing the wheels, special equipment is necessary to communicate with the sensor and to identify the sensor in the on-board computer.

ATEQ offers simple, hand-held T.P.M.S. tools for service stations, which allow activating, checking the correct operation of the sensors, and in some cases also the identification in the car’s computer. These devices are universal for all car brands and all types of sensors. The user selects the car brand from the menu and can proceed to activation and diagnostics of the sensor. A connecting cable is also available, which allows communication with the computer (option available only to advanced users).
